What’s Your Wedding Décor Style?

Updated: Oct 31

Are you unsure what your style vision is for your wedding ceremony and/or reception? Or do you know what you like style-wise, but just aren't sure how to pull it off for your wedding ceremony and/or reception?

Here is a glossary (and some examples) that may help:

Vintage: vintage décor alludes to antiques and timeless details. This is the second most popular style according to the Knot.

Examples of vintage décor: a lounge area with old chairs, side tables and love seats/sofas. Mercury glass votive and candle holders. Old furniture such as buffets or sideboards (restored or not). Distressed or imperfectly painted mirrors, windows, frames, metal birdcages or lanterns. Old frames and mirrors are used to display aged family photos, pearl strands or as seating charts, menus, or table numbers. Vintage (scrolled edge) chargers, vintage tableware and tea pots, old books, antique suitcases and cake plates, Tolix chairs and even old trunks add to this nostalgic theme.

Rustic: rustic décor is relaxed, natural and full of local, homespun touches, wood and even galvanized metal items. According to the Knot, it is still the most popular style.

Examples of rustic decor: wood rectangular "banquet" tables and distressed looking galvanized Tolix chairs. Wooden picture frames, table numbers, crates, arches, birch rounds, chalkboard displays and real wood centerpieces also help to add to this top rated theme. Burlap is still requested occasionally in the form of charger plates, runners or draping. This theme is starting to move away somewhat from decor made from mason jars. And hay bales are definitely out!

Boho (Bohemian): Boho décor is relaxed, colorful and natural. Not matchy-matchy.

Examples: a comfy lounge area, mismatched votive holders, natural material chargers (rattan, wood, birch-look), colorful table linens and furniture (Moroccan, Native American and Indian items are often incorporated), simple wooden arches for ceremony, lightly draped with flowy fabric. The latest trend in this theme is the use of macrame, whether hanging from wires or trees or used to top tables.

Beach/Nautical: loving all things water, beachy and beach-related fun.

Examples: driftwood ceremony arches, twines and ropes, lots of white décor or glass such as lanterns and candleholders, blue or striped-blue table linens, rattan/twine chargers, netting, shells, starfish and sand dollars, beach sand and glass, white wicker or rattan lounge furniture.

Art Déco: glitzy glam, many metallic décor pieces, Great Gatsby (roaring 20s).

Examples: geometric centerpieces and votive holders, metallic or lighted backdrops behind the head table, table numbers use the art deco font and a metallic holder, sequined table linens, metallic centerpieces, glamorous/glass cake stands and chargers. Black and gold are the most popular combination used here.

Eclectic: This is the category that I created years ago (for home interior/exterior design and now for weddings). It encompasses design from all of the more well-known styles, but you make it uniquely yours by adding mix and match elements from your favorites or even bring in items from your home.

Examples: The rule in design used to be that you could never mix metals (for example, rose gold and copper) or woods (dark stained with light stained). Or the wedding rule was that using certain colors in your wedding was seasonal. One of the best examples of this is the Pantone color Living Coral. I bet we'll see touches of that color in fall or even winter! Hard and fast rules are no longer the case! Want to pay homage to your grandmother’s blue glass bowl even though your wedding is definitely not vintage? Set up a display just for that, but adding touches of your theme. Add it to the top of a rented buffet or in a cluster of crates. Or mix and match photo frames with various styles/colors. Cluster a group of glass votive holders mixed with ceramic along your tables. Have one thing about them that is similar, so the effect isn't too jarring.

New! Celestial!- This style has really burst on the scene in recent years, but now even dresses are getting in on the trend. Included in this style are plenty of stars, and the colors bright blue and yellow. Rent lighted backdrops, star shaped pillar candle holders, star printed table numbers and place cards and choose bright blue and yellow linens and napkins and gold pieces, such as charger plates, napkin rings, and other pretty accessories. Hang stars (in just about any form) from the ceiling or hang fairy lights from any trees that might be on the venue's property. The "sky" is the limit here!

While I have not covered EVERY décor style possible, these are some of the most popular as voted on by couples at The Knot.
